IMPORTANT STRIKE CARE INFORMATION – PLEASE READ!

In an effort to respond to KOSC families’ care needs, the Board of Directors has been discussing the strike care procedures. Based on input from families, the Board has decided on the following course of action:

  • Strike care will be determined by a weekly lottery, rather than locking families into specific days of care for the duration of the strike.
  • The 24-hour request period will begin at 7am on the Wednesday prior to the week in question and end at 7am the following day. Following the deadline, all requests will be double-checked and then entered into a lottery system.
  • In order to be eligible for the lottery draw, families must submit their request for care via email to kosckids@telus.net within the 24-hour request period for the week in question. Please use the subject line “Strike Care Request” and include the following information in your email:
      • Your child(ren)’s name(s) and grade(s).
      • The days of care you require.
  • KOSC will send a reply to all strike care request emails to confirm that they have been received. If you have not received a confirmation email by 12pm (noon) on the day that the 24-hour request period ends, please call us directly at (250) 652-5546.
  • The lottery selection process will occur once the 24-hour request period has ended and all requests have been double-checked. The selections will be done by family rather than by child, and the draw will be supervised by more than one person to ensure that transparency and fairness is maintained.
  • The results of the lottery will be communicated to families by the end of that day (Thursday). This gives families time to speak with employers and/or make alternate arrangements as necessary on Friday.
  • Fees for strike care are $40/day. This reflects the additional operating costs of running a full-day program.
  • I have asked the Board of Directors to provide me with guidance in regards to cancellation and waitlist procedures for strike care in hopes of developing a clear set of guidelines. I will provide this information as soon as possible.

For the sake of clarity, here is a schedule of the request and confirmation dates for strike care if the school closure continues throughout the month of November.

KOSC will be closed for the stat holiday on Monday, November 11th.

November 22nd is on the calendar as a Pro-D Day. As in previous years, we will be honouring prior Pro-D Day registration for that day in the event that the strike is still ongoing.

We understand that this is a frustrating and stressful situation for everyone, and we are hopeful that an amicable resolution will be reached as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
